Higher Ground Productions, founded by former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama, will produce another film for Netflix as part of their overall contract with the streamer. Rustina tells the story of Bayard Rustin, the late civil rights activist who helped organize the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where Dr. Martin Luther King gave his famous speech “I Have a Dream”.
Netflix’s Rustin is staged by the Emmy nominee George C. Wolfe who drove last Ma Rainey’s black bottom for Netflix with the late Chadwick Boseman. The script for Rustina was written by Dustin Lance Black, who won an Oscar in 2008 for his screenplay for Milk, starring Sean Penn.

What is the plot of Rustina?
Netflix Rustina is a film based on the life of the late civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, who as a strategist and activist promoted nonviolent strategies for social change for more than half a century. He is best known for his March 1963 organization on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the platform for Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech “I Have a Dream”.
His work has at times been hampered by a past many considered controversial, including membership in the Young Communist League; a three-year prison sentence for conscientious objection to cooperation with the military; and his overt homosexuality, including an arrest for indecent vagrancy. Senator Strom Thurmond denounced Rustin in the Senate before the 1963 march. Rustin died in 1987 after a visit to Haiti, where he investigated the possibility of democratic change in connection with upcoming elections.
In 2013, President Obama posthumously awarded Bayard Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Wilkins was a civil rights activist and chairman of the NAACP. A. Philip Randolph is also portrayed in the series, who was an American trade unionist and civil rights activist.
