Malayalam film producer Anto Joseph has confirmed that his upcoming big-budget films Malik, starring Fahadh Faasil, and Cold Case, starring Prithviraj, will be released directly on streaming platforms. He has issued a letter explaining why he decided to skip the theatrical release.
Anto Joseph said in his statement that he has waited a long time to give theatrical releases to these big star films. He said Malik along with superstar Mohanlal’s magnum opus Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham would release on May 13, as the Kerala government had allowed theaters in the state to run at 50 percent capacity. The states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telugu had allowed 100 percent occupancy in theaters at the time.
Sadly, theaters were closed again as the second wave of Covid-19 intensified. “These films will only recoup their production costs if 100 percent occupancy is allowed. Since there is no clarity on when theaters will reopen and given the existing economic hurdles, I am trying to get an OTT release for these films,” Anto said, adding that he is facing a financial crisis.
However, Anto stopped revealing details about which OTT platform would be streaming these movies. The industry buzz is that Amazon Prime Video will likely get the rights to Malik and Cold Case. However, sources claimed that Anto has not yet signed an agreement.
Malik is a gangster drama written and directed by Mahesh Narayanan. In addition to Fahadh Faasil, the film also stars Biju Menon, Nimisha Sajayan, Joju George, Dileesh Pothan and Vinay Forrt.
Meanwhile, Cold Case marks the directorial debut of cinematographer Tanu Balak. There is a lot of speculation that Kuruthi and Brahmam of Prithviraj are also likely to go the OTT way.
