Kingdom – Copyright. Netflix

After another damn good season of kingdomYour fans will be even more greedy when the Korean horror series returns for a third. We’re still waiting for Netflix to confirm that a third season is coming, but we can look forward to the one-hour special episode “Ashin of the North,” out July 2021.

kingdom is a South Korean Netflix original horror series directed by Kim Eun-hee. The series is based on the book Land of gods, which was also written by Kim Eun-hee. First launched in 2019, the horror series has since grown to become one of the most popular non-English titles available to stream on Netflix.

Has kingdom has the third season been extended?

Official Netflix Renewal Status: Pending (Last updated: 6/4/2021)

It’s been over a year since kingdom Season two on Netflix, and unfortunately we have no news yet that the series has been extended for season three.

Our trust that kingdom will return after confirming the series will return with a special bonus episode examining the character of Gianna Jun, played by Jun Ji-hyun. It was confirmed that Kingdom: Ashin of the North will be released on Netflix on July 23, 2021.

Despite the lack of renewal, we’re still confident that the series will return for a third season. Our confidence has only grown since screenwriter Kim Eun-hee and director Park in-je were interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter.

When asked about the amount and number of stories she had left, Kim Eun-hee said the following:

Oddly enough, Kingdom is a series that gives me more energy the more I write it. The cast and crew all have great chemistry and there is so much more to talk about. If viewers let it, I’d love it to develop through season 10.

The the last we heard from Kim Eun-hee she discussed what role Jun Ji Hyun could play in the third season:

I think Jun Ji Hyun will play a central role alongside the main characters from the first and second seasons.

Fans and we ourselves are delighted to read how enthusiastic Kim Eun-hee is about the future of kingdom. Ten seasons is incredibly ambitious, but considering how popular the horror series has become, who can say it can’t get into double digits?

What can you expect in the third season of kingdom

Below we discuss what we get from the third season of. can expect kingdom.

* Spoilers for kingdom Season two *

Outbreak in the north

Seven years and three months since Prince Chang faked his death, we learned from Young-Shin, when we met Cho Beom-Pal again, that His Royal Highness had examined the resurrection plant and hunted it all over Korea. We learned that the resurrection plant had grown all over Korea and that a mysterious seller from the Sino-Korean border had sold it to the common people.

They took Prince Chang, Seobi and his guard north and discovered an abandoned village. Upon examination, they soon discovered that the village had become infected. After one of the undead had been killed, the continued ringing of the bells between the trees indicated that more infected people were around.

With only three trained fighters among them, from what we’ve seen, it is very likely that Prince Chang will have to withdraw from the north. Without the appropriate number of soldiers to defeat zombies, another outbreak could occur in the north.

More undead on the way …

Who is the plant seller?

When the mysterious seller was tracked north, it was found that the person who tried to spread the plague was a woman. Her motives are unclear at this point, but as one of the farmers revealed, he had bought the resurrection plant from the border between China and Korea so that it could work for the Ming Dynasty.

The intent could be to annihilate the people of Korea and then allow Chinese troops to conquer with ease.

Alternatively, she might just want to watch the world burn.

Who is she!?

The new undead prince?

Although he removed the worms from the young prince as a baby, at least one of the parasites remained in his system and slumbered until his brain had developed enough to take over.

For now, all we know is that the worm that is transmitting the infection has spread to the prince’s brain. Given that it has been dormant for seven years, it may affect the young king differently than other victims.

Personally, it would be too easy for infection to lay claim to the prince, turn him into a mindless monster and spread the plague within the palace walls. It’s likely that we’ll see a new form of contamination that can taint his mind until he eventually turns into a smarter and even deadlier zombie.

Will a cure ever be found?

Seobi had spent most of seven years trying to find a cure for the plague of the undead. Apart from the discovery that immersing a victim in water destroys the worms, very little progress had been made.

In her research, Seobi was able to summarize everything we knew about the virus;

  • The worms are influenced by the weather and prefer colder temperatures over heat, but are very volatile in extreme heat.
  • The undead rested in the months of spring and summer
  • In autumn and winter, the undead are only active at night when temperatures drop
  • After the winter solstice until the first day of spring, the dead remain active day and night.
  • Soaking the victim in water before infection sets in will destroy the worms in the body

Unfortunately, Seobi was wrong about the immunity of newborns, as the worms slumbered in the prince, even after he submerged his wounds.

Seobi’s research has been placed in the hands of Cho Beom-Pal in the event of another outbreak that could occur sooner than anyone expected.

Kim Eun-hees Update

In the same discussion where screenwriter Kim Eun-hee spoke about the role of Jun Ji Hyun in Kingdom, she revealed a little bit of what we can expect from season three:

Season one told the story of hunger and season two told the story of blood. If Netflix agrees, I want season three to tell the story of resentment. Season two drew attention to the concept of “temperature” and I think if history traveled north, the different ecosystems in the north would serve as a clue.

Casting news for kingdom Season three

In the second season we said goodbye to many actors, many of whom unfortunately fell victim to the plague of the undead.

One actor we will definitely see more of in season three is Jun Ji Hyun. While this name may be unfamiliar to some, the South Korean actress was seen in the dying seconds of kingdom Season two, revealing that she is the culprit in spreading the Resurrection Flower in Korea.

It was unveiled at the end of 2019 that Jun Ji Hyun had been cast, but her role was a closely guarded secret. We can see why now, as their cast confirms as well as a third season of Kingdom.

Performers we expect for the third season are:

role Actor actress Where have I seen / heard them?

As we speculated above, Covid-19 could have a major impact on season three production, meaning the series could be delayed for at least a few months.

It is becoming increasingly unlikely that the kingdom will return in any form in 2021. The earliest we can hope for the series to return to Netflix now is 2022.

How many episodes will Season 3 have?

We have always known that kingdom had been postponed from eight to twelve episodes, but plans for a third season might not have been considered had it not been for the overwhelming popularity.

Now that we’re on new territory, we could see more episodes of kingdom. We’d love to see more, for sure, but the manufacturing cost kingdom is extremely expensive. Netflix can often be strict about the number of episodes in an original. So don’t be surprised if the series returns with another six episodes.

Although we like more than six episodes of. would see kingdom Season three is more than good enough for us to have more of the zombie horror.
