Actors Riteish Deshmukh, Sonakshi Sinha and Saqib Saleem started shooting on Tuesday for Kakuda, a horror comedy by filmmaker Aditya Sarpotdar. The film is being shot in Gujarat.
Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP banner took to their social media platforms to announce their “homegrown horror comedy.” They wrote: “Triple Troubles on the Way!👻 Get ready for a spooktacular laugh-out-loud laugh with our home-grown direct-to-digital film, #Kakuda! Shooting starts today🎬.”
Kakuda also marks the Hindi directorial debut of the man behind critically acclaimed Marathi films such as Classmates, Mauli and Faster Fene.
Speaking of the film, Sarpotdar said in a statement: “I am very excited to be working with Ronnie Screwvala. We are treating the film as nothing less than a large scale commercial film. The casting was just perfect and the story will have you both on the go. the edge of your seat as if in crevices.”
Sonakshi Sinha expressed her excitement about making a horror comedy, saying, “Given the current situation, a fun comedy movie is really the need of the hour. I loved Kakuda’s script from the moment I read it. It’s the kind of film that I as an audience would like to watch.”
Riteish Deshmukh added: “I can’t wait to get started right away and work on the film with Sonakshi and Saqib. I personally love the horror comedy genre and ‘Kakuda’ is a great opportunity for me to explore the role of a ghostbuster.”
Calling the film a fun ride, Saqib Saleem said, “A great script, a gifted director, a supporting producer and extremely talented co-stars, what more could you want in a movie? ‘Kakuda’ is going to be a fun ride.”
Producer Ronnie Screwvala, who has financed films such as Vidya Balan’s Natkhat, Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar’s The Sky is Pink, said: “With a clear focus on homegrown ideas and development, I’m excited to announce our horror comedy Kakuda. With a solid script, an extremely talented cast and driven director, we hope to push the boundaries within the genre.”
The film’s synopsis reads: “With equal doses of comedy and haunting, Kakuda explores the legend of a strange curse in a village stuck in time. The eclectic trio is confronted by a defiant ghost that makes them question superstition, tradition and even love in a roller coaster ride full of fear and fun.”
Written by Avinash Dwivedi and Chirag Garg, the film was developed from a nascent stage by Salona Bains Joshi, the film’s Associate Producer. Kakuda will be direct to digital and is expected to be released in early 2022.
