Our Recommended Choices of Watching Studio Ghibli

If you’re brand new to Studio Ghibli and looking to get started with Studio Ghibli, it’s best to start with the most popular movies that the animation studio has released so far.

To begin with, we would start with My neighbor Totoro.

More than three decades after its release, and My neighbor Totoro is still one of the most beloved anime of all time, and not just under the Studio Ghibli banner. The healthy story of Satsuki and her younger sister moving to the countryside and playing with the magical forest creatures can be enjoyed by everyone and is especially enjoyable with the family.

For higher stakes and adventure, the best titles to watch next would be Abducted as if by magic, Howl’s moving castle Where Princess mononoke.

Abducted as if by magic, arguably the most successful film in Studio Ghibli’s library, is held in high regard as one of the greatest animated films ever made. The most financially prosperous, Abducted as if by magic is the second highest grossing anime of all time and even won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards.

A must-have from the studio’s incredible collection. It is without a doubt a watch you should not miss.

Join Chihiro on her adventure to remember her own name, escape the contract with the witch Yubaba, and restore her parents to humans after their transformation into pigs.

The next step is Howl’s moving castle, the second most successful film at the box office for Studio Ghibli. Inspiration for the film came from director Hayao Miyazaki’s anger over the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The whole theme is very anti-war, but it doesn’t stop Howl’s moving castle be a fun adventure for everyone to enjoy.

After the young and beautiful Sophie is transformed into an old woman by a jealous witch, Sophie must turn to her friend, the wizard Howl, to regain her youth. At the same time, Howl must face two warring nations and bring peace to troubled times.

Last, but not least, is the classic from the 90s, Princess mononoke. Fifth of nine films directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary director proposed the film’s first concepts in the 1970s, drawing sketches of a princess living in the woods with a beast.

Outside of Japan, the movie didn’t perform as well as expected, but years later when Princess mononoke was available for purchase on DVD, millions of homes around the world purchased the film, experiencing the magic of Studio Ghibli for the first time. It could be argued that the success of the home video release of Princess mononoke paved the way for the theatrical success of Abducted as if by magic and Howl’s moving castle.

In the 14th century in Japan, a prince, cursed by the corruption of a demon, finds himself caught up in the conflict between the wolf god Moro and his companion Princess Mononoke, fighting the atrocities committed by mankind.
