A few years ago, many outlets on the internet spread the story that Netflix was about to get into it Final Fantasy Series, but not only haven’t we heard of it, it’s also still unclear whether Netflix will even be home to it. What’s happening? Let’s investigate.
For decades, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy fantasy IP has seen dozens of video game entries and many other mediums, be it in movies or on television.
In June 2019 it was reported and reported by several outlets from the likes of Esquire. The show in question is a live-action adaptation of Final Fantasy XIV, the popular MMO, and is the fourteenth entry in the Final Fantasy franchise.
To date, a Final Fantasy XIV show is in development, but it is not currently associated with Netflix.
Let’s dive into where the confusion began.
First announced by Hivemind in June 2019 (the production company for shows like The wide and even work on Netflix The witcher Series), a live action series FINAL FANTASY XIV The series was announced as a partnership with Sony Pictures Television.
The PR release is still available online and if you dig through the details, you absolutely won’t mention Netflix’s involvement.
Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton are the two main names of the project so far.
Where did the Netflix connection come from? The earliest reference we have found is from a Japanese source that was quoted on Wikipedia and a few other places Netflix linked to the project.
The article, published around the same time as the original announcement, links Netflix directly to the project, but according to our research and inquiries (including Netflix that did not comment), Netflix is not currently involved.
If you’re wondering if the series is still in development at all, Jake Thornton provided an update in late 2020.
I know this is not the news people (including us!) Want, but unfortunately, that’s all I can say at this point. Keep sending the good vibes and maybe when all of this is over we will get the show we all want to see and go to Eorzea all together. #FFXIV

So right now the series is still in early development and has not yet been connected to a streamer or network.
Of course, the series could end up making it to Netflix. Sony Pictures Television is essentially a freelance distributor. Unlike many other larger production companies that have their own streaming services, Sony has no individual loyalty and tends to distribute their shows to just about every streamer, including many to Netflix.
Additionally Rumors of other Final Fantasy titles surfaced in 2021 with Netflix supposedly working on one with Square Enix Final Fantasy 7 remake Anime series. Again, nothing official.
Final Fantasy however, is in some form on Netflix. Netflix was released in September 2017 FINAL FANTASY XIV Papa of Light. More recently, on April 1, 2021, Netflix received US Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV exclusive (although it wasn’t branded as a Netflix original).
There you have it, hope this isn’t too disappointing for those who want it Final Fantasy XIV to get to Netflix.
