Headlines dominated the last few days Avatar: The Last Airbender and The legend of Korra If they leave Netflix immediately, they’ll likely stream a little longer before switching to Paramount + exclusively.
Both animated series originally aired on Nickelodeon in the 2000s and were added to Netflix in the US in 2020 and both highlighted the top 10.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Netflix in particular did very well in the top 10 with 61 days. The legend of Korra spent 20 days in the US top 10.
Brian Robbins confirms Avatar: The Last Airbender will leave Netflix at some point
Speak with The Hollywood Reporter, Brian Robbins (who serves as CEO of Nickelodeon) was asked in mid-July 2020 if there would be any major shows licensed to Netflix. Here are the quotes:
THR: At some point, I would envision Avatar and iCarly being removed from Netflix and coming home exclusively to Paramount +.
Yes. And it’s not like this is some secret that we pull other people’s eyes over other ministries. They enjoy the content and understand the strategy. We are very open to it.
Later in the interview, they seem to gloss over the fact that they are also licensed The legend of Korra to Netflix, but the main point is that Avatar: The Last Airbender and The legend of Korra will not stay in service forever.
That shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has been a Netflix customer for a long time.
How long will they be on Netflix? Series are usually licensed to Netflix at annual intervals. The contract is clearly longer than a year as we passed the show’s one year anniversary on May 15, 2020.
Most of the Nickelodeon shows currently available on Netflix have been available since 2019, and any ones added before that are no longer available. That means we can watch the series for a few more years and leave in the summer of 2023.
Netflix doesn’t have distance data for. specified Avatar: The Last Airbender or The legend of Korra.
Will Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra leave Netflix outside of the US?
Of course, Netflix also hosts these two shows in most regions of the world.
Although they all differed in when they received the two respective series, unlike the US, Nickelodeon and ViacomCBS have no streaming presence in these regions, at least for the time being.
So we should assume that these contracts will eventually expire in these regions, but where they go after Netflix is not immediately clear.
Elsewhere, Paramount + is preparing exclusive avatar projects in the future, with the newly founded avatar studios creating new content including a cinema animation film.
Netflix is also working on its own live-action avatar project which has gone through several issues during development. Filming for the new series is scheduled to begin in November 2021.
